Since Roar graduated from the highly acclaimed National Danish Film School in 1999, he has spent the last the 23 years serving the Scandinavian movie & broadcast industry by working on countless feature films, animations, documentaries, computer games, television series and programs. He works as a supervising sound designer, sound effect editor, re-recording mixer, music supervisor, composer, production sound recordist and co-producer. His professional resumé includes three nominations for the Danish Film Academy Award for best sound-design and he has co-produced and co-financed several award winners, among them the film Jätten/The Giant that was awarded the Swedish Film Academy Award “GULDBAGGEN” for best movie in 2017 and the Special Jury Award In San Sebastian 2016.
Roar had worked with director/producer Barry Levinson, the acclaimed Danish directors Hella Joof (Splitting Up Together, All Inclusive), Henrik Ruben Genz (Terribly Happy, Good People), the experimental Swedish director Johannes Nyholm (Jätten/The Giant, Las Palmas), Kim Bodnia (The Bridge) and directors/writers such as Jens Dahl (3 Things, Pusher), Daniel Dencik (Gold Coast), Hunter Richards (London/Free The Nipple) and the British/Palestinian artist Larissa Sansour.
Roar has also had the pleasure of mixing film scores by much acclaimed composers such as Angelo Badalamenti, Harry Gregson-Williams and Jacob Groth. Roar´s latest work includes the Danish TV-Series "The Sommerdahl Murders" that is showing all over Europa and in the US and the Americas. Roar lends great attention to detail at the same time maintaining a broad overview. Roar often finds himself solving the sensitive and difficult dilemmas that arise when excellence and ambition collide with the reality of economic limitations and working conditions. He and his company have therefore taken on the role as investing co-producers on selected projects. Roar Skau Olsen is one of the few sound mixers/sound designers/re-recording mixers capable of seeing a project through all the levels of a production. This he has proven on location as sound recordist/sound mixer on multiple European feature shoots as well as part of a team that was allowed to film in and around and behind the scenes at the US presidential inauguration of in 2008, for the documentary Poliwood by Barry Levinson (Rainman, Wag The Dog). He also served as sound recordist and sound designer, thus single-handedly creating the sound design and re-recording of the luscious and compelling sound tracks for internationally prize winning Danish features like Terribly Happy (Frygtelig Lykkelig), Rosa Morena and Ronal The Barbarian. Several of the features Roar has worked on have received a multitude of awards from festivals like the Sundance Film Festival, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Cinequest Film Festival and the Berlinale, just to name a few.
Roar Skau Olsen holds both a US and a Danish passport and lives in Sweden, 35 min. from Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. Roar´s international background has served his clients well through the years, in New York, California, Texas, Russia, The Dominican Republic, Croatia, Malta, Sweden, France, Germany and all over the rest of Europe. Roar has founded one of the leading sound facilities in Denmark and together with his colleagues he provides all the major film studios in Scandinavia with location sound equipment, sound studio facilities, sound design, manpower and infrastructure.
